Smallwood manor is a member of the Midland divison of Woodard Schools. Its senior school, Denstone College, was founded in 1873 by Nathaniel Woodard and the Preparatory School opened in 1902 on the College premises before moving in 1938 to its present site at Smallwood Manor. No one can fail to be impressed by the beautiful grounds and the surrounding countryside, providing a safe environment which has been a source of inspiration to countless Smallwoodians. The Pre-Preparatory Department opened in 1983 and two nursery classes have recently been added, so that the school caters for pupils from age 2 to 11.
As a Woodard School, Smallwood has enjoyed an excellent reputation for preparing children for 11+ Entrance examinations and scholarship. Smallwood has a fine reputation for sport — facilities include a covered heated swimming pool, a gymnasium, and two hard tennis courts.
The main manor building itself was built to designs by the architect Col. R.W. Edis in 1886.
