September 22, 2009

Mike Harrison - Headmaster, Smallwood Manor Preparatory School We are delighted to announce the recent appointment of Mike Harrison MA (Ed) as Headmaster here at Smallwood Manor Preparatory and Nursery School.

Mike, who has more than 25 years teaching experience, joins Smallwood Manor from Foremarke Hall, where he was Head of Upper School as well as Head of Pastoral Care.

In his new role, Mike will work closely with the school’s 31 teaching and five management and support staff to ensure the school provides a broad, balanced, and enriching curriculum, so every pupil can achieve their full potential.

Speaking about Mike’s appointment, Steven Varley, Chair of Governors at Smallwood Manor said:

‘We’re delighted to welcome Mike to Smallwood Manor.  He joins us from another local prep school where he has an excellent reputation for the quality of his teaching, leadership and his implementation of the pastoral care programme.

‘We are certain that he has the qualities needed to build on Smallwood Manor’s success in a way that will support our ethos of providing a nurturing Christian environment that allows youngsters to thrive in all areas of their development.’

During the last academic year, Smallwood Manor Preparatory School achieved the highest number of scholarship awards for seven years, with 11 pupils securing awards to their chosen school, whilst the Nursery scooped the nursery design trophy at the NMT Awards.  Mike explained that it was this reputation together with its small class sizes and focus on family values that attracted him to the post.  He said:

‘It’s an honour to be joining Smallwood Manor as Headmaster and I plan to build on the school’s outstanding achievements. I am looking forward to working with the staff to find ways to develop our teaching methods, as well as improving the facilities available in order to guarantee the children enjoy the best possible learning environment.’

An accomplished linguist, Mike is fluent in French.  He is also a keen sportsman, enjoying both rugby and cricket.  He is therefore keen to continue with Smallwood Manor’s strong sporting traditions and the provision of French language lessons as well as continuing to develop its comprehensive programme of music and the arts.

Outside of school, Mike enjoys walking and is actively involved with his local church. He and his wife Caroline and their two children Melanie and Mark, have moved into the Headmaster’s residence at Smallwood Manor.  He added:

‘Smallwood Manor is a beautiful place and it is a real privilege to be able to live here in the grounds.  The combination of woodland, landscaped gardens, and sports facilities makes it a truly inspirational place to spend time in.  I believe that it provides a truly enriching environment not only for the pupils but also for the staff, parents, and any visitors that come here.’
